Project Description

PREPARATION…

In order to make the most of our first session, I have provided you with the Client Paperwork. If you are both attending the sessions, then you should both complete your own set of the Client Paperwork. I have found that there is a lot of anxiety surrounding the first session. Sometimes it helps to read through the Client Paperwork at your leisure, so that you are fully aware of what you are signing and can take your time to think through the questions and answer them.

WEEKLY SESSIONS…

In the first session, I will review the New Client Paperwork you prepared, ask about your current problems, what you hope to change as a result of therapy, and collaborate on a plan for treatment as a unit. In the second session, I prefer to meet each partner separately in order to understand the issues more deeply and to develop an individual plan for treatment. If time allows, together we will discuss communication issues and how to manage conflict until our next session.

The remainder of the sessions will be focused on helping you to progress towards the goals we established by weaving in strategies that will assist you to manage the conflict cycle and communicate effectively with your partner. There may be times when we will spend part of the session meeting individually; however, most of the treatment will be done as a couple.

ADOPTING “THE GYM” MENTALITY…

Any relationship will take a commitment of time and hard work. The labor of couple’s therapy is often compared to a “workout at the gym”. You cannot expect to come home with the body you desire after a few visits to the gym. It will take frequent workouts, struggle, sweat, the guidance of a personal trainer, and endurance. All of these ingredients, plus the element of time, will result in huge rewards. In couple’s therapy, the reward is a healthier and richer relationship in which each partner feels heard, respected, and understood.
